IAM: The Institute of Asset Management
February 2011

The IAM has come a long way in the last five years and we hope very much that you are glad to be supporters.

We also hope you agree that our Learned Society activity has been very productive - we can certainly assure you that the IAM Office is working hard to make your Member services more user-friendly, reliable and efficient.

In order to prepare a new Strategic Plan, we are holding an event in late March, not only to consult your Council but also to agree detailed objectives for the next 5 years - and specific targets for next financial year.

If you have any thoughts about the direction the IAM should take, please feel free to contact your Council representatives and let them know.

Members Conference 2011

The Conference Theme this year is ‘Innovation for a sustainable future’.  The format of the conference will follow the successful structure of previous years with a good mix of speakers and interactive workshops followed by  the popular drinks reception and dinner on the evening of the 20th June.

You won't meet a more interesting or influential group of senior asset managers in a relaxed social setting anywhere else!  The same high qualiity accommodation is available and, once again, the value is unrivalled.  Members who have attended from as far away as Australia and North America have told us the trip was worthwhile!

The 2-day Members Conference on 20/21 June is followed by a Qualifications Workshop on 22nd.  The Workshop makes it even more worthwhile if you are making a journey but we are relaxed about the transfer of tickets (between eligible delegates!) on different days if your company cannot spare you!

Watch out for an email offering Early Bird Discounts!

Qualifications Workshop 22nd June

The Workshop will focus on the emerging Qualifications and how to get involved as well as the latest on the International Accord.  The exact content is still being developed but at this stage, the concept is:

DEVELOPING PEOPLE FOR ASSET MANAGEMENT ORGANISATIONS

Aims:
To give delegates information and insights on building and maintaining an asset management workforce AND
To help delegates interpret available tools and services and use IAM professional resources

Morning: Competence, Job Descriptions, Selection and Training
Afternoon: Qualifications and Career Planning

  • Meeting the requirements of PAS55 and beyond
  • IAM Asset Management Competences Framework and Guidance
  • IAM Endorsed Training Programme
  • Developing asset management teams
  • Proposed IAM Qualifications - the Asset Management Certificate and Diploma
  • International Accord on Asset Management

ISO Update

The first meeting of ISO Project Committee 251 takes place in Melbourne at the end of February.  The UK Mirror Committee has submitted comments on the 'Working Drafts' for consideration and has reviewed the submissions from other countries.

At the last count there were 21 countries registered as participants and a dozen or more registered as observers.  The IAM has included comments submitted by Members as well as UK citizens.

Certificate & Diploma - consultation

March - May 2011, IAM members will be consulted on plans for two new IAM-endorsed professional qualifications.  A questionnaire on the proposed contents of the Asset Management Certificate and Diploma will be sent to all members and several major employers have agreed to run workshops with their staff.

On 26 May there will be a seminar in London to consider the launch of the qualifications: this will be hosted by Osbourne Clarke and members will be invited to attend this on a first come, first served basis.  This work is led by the IAM Qualifications & Professional Development Committee.  For more details, contact Tim Feest, Project Manager

Membership Certificates

Following a number of requests, the IAM now offers a membership certificate and framing service for both Individual and Corporate Members.

We have selected an experienced partner to despatch and guarantee the delivery of framed certificates in good condition.  The frames and mounts have been designed to display the certificates to best advantage and they bear the Institute's strapline: 'the professional body for whole life management of physical assets'.

The A4 certificates can be mailed direct from this office - without frames - for only £10 including P&P and taxes.

The framed certificates are available in a choice of two colours and can be supplied for only £30 including P&P and taxes.  (A PDF will be emailed to you to save removing the certificate from the frame if you need this.)  See our website for more information and to place an order...

and finally...

Our President, Robert Davis, and a number of well-known IAM people are supporting the Malaysian INFRAASSETS2010 conference in Kuala Lumpur next week.  This would be an ideal opportunity to meet them as well as attend an interesting event in a country committed to understanding and implementing asset management.

I have the imminent pleasure of attending the ISO meeting in Melbourne and Chris Lloyd and I are looking forward to joining the Sydney Chapter of the Asset Management Council at their AGM on 24th February en route.  We anticipate a lively exchange of views following a brief presentation on some IAM developments, particularly regarding qualifications.

After that I shall be in Melbourne 25th - 5 March and I would be delighted to meet any IAM Members if we can find a mutually convenient time.  Do let me know if you are around.
