The IAM has a Code of Conduct that applies automatically as a condition of membership to every class of Member, both Individual and Corporate.
There are also various Codes of Practice that apply to specific regulated activities such as provision of services as an ENDORSED PROVIDER. Endorsed Providers are required to be Members and, as such, subject to the Code of Conduct.
The Code of Conduct requires that Members acquaint themselves with any such Codes of Practice and observe them. It is a matter of principle that the processes associated with enforcing and upholding all Codes shall be conducted as transparently and fairly as possible taking account of the need for confidentiality where justified.
Members are invited to propose improvements to any of these Codes and should make proposals in the first instance to the CEO. If any Member becomes aware of a contravention of the Code, they are required (under that Code) to make it known to the Institute (preferably directly to the CEO). This will be treated as a complaint. Such reports may be treated in confidence if the reporting Member so wishes it.
Complaints against a Member will be recorded and investigated. This process will be handled by the CEO on behalf of the Board. Should circumstances warrant it, the Member concerned will be invited to explain their position and, in the event of the complaint being well-founded, will also be invited to make proposals to put matters right. The CEO will recommend appropriate action to the Board.
In the event that the matter cannot be amicably resolved, the facts will be reported to Council and a Panel will be appointed to decide the matter. A Member who believes that they have not been treated fairly is also entitled to appeal to Council.
The IAM reserves the right to require Members to resign or to terminate their membership if this seems justified. The IAM also reserves the right to make the facts known in the event of serious misconduct, even recording publicly the fact of expulsion after the event.
