The professional body for whole life management of physical assets

IAM: The Institute of Asset Management
January 2017

A very happy New Year, if somewhat after the event!  (I never know when you stop saying Happy New Year when you see an old acquaintance in January.  But my best excuse is to recognise the Year of the Rooster with Chinese New Year this weekend.)

I shall constrain similar comments during the rest of the year, but 2017 has already brought surprises – and it would now be surprising if these ceased!  Our ability to forecast is more limited than ever and even asset management risks usually susceptible to formal assessment may be more challenging.  This is no reason to stop trying.  We need to balance the risk of having no assessment at all when pursuing our purpose.

The IAM is approaching another significant step in our evolution.  Last year was one of turbulence and yet significant consolidation and commitment to a coherent strategy to serve you, our Members, and society.  We have been inverting the organisation and soon the Chapters will have a strong influence not only on strategy but operations.  Together with completion of improved IT (project completion due in March!) and growing staff resources, we shall be better placed to support you in doing the interesting stuff!

I believe that the next meeting of TC251 will result in a much better ISO55002 (Guidance).  With that and emerging interest in so much of the world, we should see an increase of the speed of adoption of asset management philosophy.  We need to be ready to increase sharply the pool of knowledgeable and capable talent!  We also need to make sure our business colleagues recognise the value of what we can contribute.

So have a really exciting 2017!  Let’s ignore the noise and confusion as much as we can and take the long view – as our profession should.

The IAM Awards open for submissions from 1 March 2017.  But this early news means you can be ready to hit the starting gate if you get your ideas together now!

The forms will be available to download and some enhanced guidance will be available in March.  The growth of entries has been encouraging and the IAM plans to raise the profile of these Awards and both Winners and Runners-Up.  So please help us do this and put links to both previous winners and the 2017 Awards wherever you can.  theIAM.org/Awards

Don’t forget, you can ‘Nominate a Colleague’ and/or their team if you think they have an achievement to celebrate.  We shall need a bigger team of judges soon and we’re always happy to have more volunteers.  So, feel free to let the Office know if you are interested.

and finally ...

I started with the New Year and I have an excellent reason to close with it, too.  It is the tradition in the UK for Her Majesty the Queen to present Honours on the occasion of her birthday in the summer and also at New Year.

Our Deputy President, Chris Newsome, has been honoured with an OBE for services to civil engineering and carbon reduction.  Many of you will know Chris but, for those who don’t, he is Director of Asset Management for Anglian Water.  You can see more here.

This makes me wonder if we have missed other achievements we should all celebrate of Members who have been recognised for related activity.  I really would be grateful if you could share such information with me, even retrospective.
