If you are an organisation that is thinking about appointing a third party to assess your management system against ISO 55001 or PAS 55, whether for an initial gap analysis or for a certificate, this page and the documents you can download from it will help you understand:
- What the IAM scheme requires of EAs, and how the assurances it provides can benefit your organisation
- How you can find an an EA that could meet your needs in the part of the world in which you operate
As anybody can declare themself to be a Certification Body to issue certificates of conformity for a management system standard, it is important that your organisation can have confidence in the competence and capability of an assessor it appoints to assess your asset management system.
It was for this reason that the IAM originally set up its Endorsed Assessor (EA) scheme for PAS 55. The IAM believed it was important to assist any potential Client to find and access suitable and reputable assessment providers that could deliver relevant, good quality asset management assessments using knowledgeable assessors.
Endorsement as an EA can cover assessment against ISO 55001 and/or PAS 55 for certification and/or gap analysis. The IAM assesses applicants against the requirements of the EA scheme, and if successful appoints them to the status of Endorsed Assessor. Using one of the IAM’s EAs will ensure that your organisation receives a thorough assessment, by individuals that are knowledgeable about asset management and the standard against which you are assessed.
To understand in detail what the IAM requires EAs to demonstrate before they can be appointed as EAs you will need to read the documents in the window to the right titled ‘Related Documents’. Please ensure that you also read the EA Scheme application form as this identifies all the information which an EA must provide to the IAM (some of this is not identified in the other scheme documents).
When you are ready to start searching for an EA, you will be able to do this by using the IAM’s Directory of Services. It contains details of all the IAM’s EAs with information which includes:
- The scope of the assessment services they provide i.e. gap analysis and/or certification against ISO 55001 and/or PAS 55
- The parts of the world in which they offer these services

The IAM wants to assure itself that EAs are delivering assessments that meet the needs of clients. To achieve this, the IAM will periodically contact the clients of EAs to seek feedback.
The EA Scheme FAQ document provides responses to a number of questions that the IAM has been asked – ranging from general questions about the conformity assessment of management systems, to specific questions about aspects of the EA Scheme.
If you have a question which is not addressed in the Scheme documents or FAQs please email your query to ea@theIAM.org
