Caring for our 200-year-old canal & river network and other precious waterway assets.

This event is hosted by the IAM Midlands Branch, with The Canal & River Trust providing insight into their Asset Management activities within the region.

The Canal & River Trust have around 35,000 assets to manage, many of which with a significant heritage value. Most are out in the open, exposed to the elements, and all need maintenance to ensure they carry on working properly. The challenge is to make sure they work on the right thing at the right time, so that people all over the country have the best experience possible on safe and reliable waterways.

Few assets on our canals and rivers are the same and the diversity of the navigation network throws up all sorts of challenges created by the weather, time and usage.  With almost 20 million visits a year from boaters, cyclists, walkers, anglers and families, our waterways take a lot of pounding and require careful, sensitive management.

This event will provide insight into the various assets which the Canal & River Trust manage, how asset condition is captured, the decision-making and challenges faced combined with the additional techniques used to ensure their overarching asset strategy is delivered. This includes how they balance differing, competing requirements and resources while assuming a long term, strategic view in favour of preserving the waterway heritage.

Register for this event, hosted at Birmingham University to find out more about how the Canal & River Trust care for their locks, bridges and other precious waterway assets.
