SAMP to the Future

In 2019 GLWA created its first Strategic Asset Management Plan (SAMP). This plan mobilized the entire organization in an 18-month effort, culminating in an improved understanding of the state of GLWA’s Asset Management Program, a clear organizational view on the strategies GLWA will use to manage its assets and a shared vision for the next steps to mature its asset management program. Time (and a pandemic), however, have facilitated different perspectives on all parts of our lives including our SAMPs. As GLWA looks to refresh its SAMP on its 5-year schedule, this presentation will explore the wins, lessons learned and changes in reality, which have come in the years past the development of its first SAMP. It will discuss the challenges associated with developing such a document, with recommendations for organizations wishing to pursue similar efforts.

   1. Q & A Discussion to follow and segue into related SSG discussion.
5. SAMP SSG Discussion:

We will have a discussion correlating the IAM Subject Specific Guidelines (SSGs) 1,2,5, 28, and 29 that are all important in develop a Strategic Asset Management Plan.  Please recall that if you have taken the course on developing and maintaining a SAMP through the Woodhouse Academy, then you will be familiar with these SSGs and their importance.  Some excerpts from the SSGs will be sent to attending members for discussion questions and collaboration.

6. US Chapter IAM Academia Committee
   1. The US Chapter Asset Management Academia Committee is researching the status of asset management courses currently being taught amongst college and community college level instructors within the United States. We will have a discussion with Great Lakes members on your opinion of the critical elements necessary for the next generation of young aspiring asset managers for an asset management curriculum in the United States.
   2. We may have college students in attendance for this meeting of whom this topic will be great engagement with them.

      • "An Independent Risk Analysis: Policy, Risks and Science of the Straits of Mackinac" presented by Guy A. Meadows, PhD., Great Lakes Research Center, Michigan Technological University. This presentation will be one not to miss! Guy will be presenting from a classroom with student attendees from Michigan Technological University.  This will still be a virtual meeting for remaining members that attend this meeting, but please do not hesitate to offer your organization as a host site in large population centers for some in-person collaboration and networking!
