Technical Starters Programme

The asset management sector is facing a growing challenge: demand for technical professionals is increasing, while the traditional talent pool is shrinking. But what if the problem is not simply a shortage of people, but a shortage of accessible pathways into the profession?

In this webinar, David Veldhoen and Roger Reichrath will share how De Nieuwe Ingenieurs and Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences developed an award-winning new work-based learning model that enables talented professionals without a traditional technical background to build a career in engineering and asset management.

They will share how the model combines full-time employment, accredited workplace-based education and intensive coaching, the lessons learned from putting it into practice, and how structural collaboration between industry and education can create new routes into the profession and help build the asset management workforce of the future.

David Veldhoen

David Veldhoen is founder and director of De Nieuwe Ingenieurs (DNI), an organisation created to open new routes into engineering and asset management. He is one of the initiators behind the Starter Trajectory, an innovative work-based learning model that selects people based on potential rather than traditional technical qualifications. Working closely with universities of applied sciences and employers across infrastructure, energy and engineering, David focuses on connecting talent, education and real-world practice. His ambition is to challenge traditional assumptions about who can become an engineer and to build new, scalable pathways into the technical professions.

Roger Reichrath

Roger Reichrath is Course Director at the School of Engineering & Applied Science at Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences. With a strong focus on connecting higher education to the changing needs of industry, he works on innovative approaches to lifelong learning, flexible education and professional development. Roger has been closely involved in the development of the Starter Trajectory from its inception, helping translate workplace needs into accredited, flexible learning through microcredentials. His role bridges education and industry, demonstrating how higher education can move beyond traditional degree programmes and become an active partner in addressing long-term skills and capability challenges.
